Jagdish Temple
Jagdish Temple, Udaipur district, Rajasthan state, India. The temple is situated at a distance of 150 metres from the main gate ‘Barapole’ of the ‘City Palace Udaipur’. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and it is celebrated for being the largest temple in the city of Udaipur. It was built by Maharana Jagat Singh, in the Indo-Aryan style of architecture in 1651. The temple is around 400 years old.
Architecture of Jagdish Temple
At the entrance of the temple are two huge stone elephants. At the front of the temple is a stone slab inscription with reference to Maharana Jagat Singh. To reach the main shrine, we have to climb 32 steps. At the top is the brass image of ‘Garuda’, which is the Vahana of Lord Vishnu. The temple consists of three stories with a steple (Vimana gopura) nearly 79 feet high and is the largest temple of Udaipur.
The temple sanctum has an idol of Lord Vishnu called ‘Lord Jagdish’ or ‘Lord Jagannath’ here, carved out of a single black rock with four arms holding Shanka, Chakra, Padma and Ghadha. 4 smaller shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesh, Goddess Durga and the Sun god are built encircling the main shrine.
The first and the second story of the temple posses intricately carved 50 pillars on each story. On the temple walls, carvings of elephants, horseman, dances and musicians can be seen. The temple has a pyramidal spire, a porch and also a prayer hall. Around 1.5 million rupees were spent on the construction of this temple in 1651.
