About Matthithaleshwara Temple
Mathithaleshwara is a small Shiva Temple situated in Kalluveeranahalli Village of Malavalli Taluk, Mandya District, Karnataka, India
Mathithaleshwara Story
According to the legend, long ago there was a saint who lived in this place. As a devotee of Lord Shiva, he does penance sitting under a tree. While he was engrossed in penance, an anthill grows around him. As time passed, one day the village chief noticed a cow standing near the anthill and giving milk. He goes close to the anthill and breaks open the anthill to find a Shiva Linga there.
Later in his dream Lord Shiva appears and says that he will settle in this place. The tree under which the saint sat for penance was a Mathi tree. The place got the name as ‘Mathithaleshwara’ as they found the Shivalinga under the Mathi tree. The bark of the tree along with mud of the anthill ( Hutha ) have medicinal properties and cures skin diseases.
Mathithaleshwara Pooja
Every Sunday and Thursday, there will be a special pooja offered in the temple. People suffering from skin diseases come here as they believe by taking a bath in the pond (Kalyani) cures skin diseases.
After the pooja, you can collect the mruthike packet [mud from the anthill (Huttada-Mannu or Mruthike) and the powder from the bark of the tree (Mathi Mara) which is mixed and kept in packets] from the priest and must be applied on the affected skin mixing it with water.
