About Sri Nimishamba Temple
Sri Nimishamba temple is located in Ganjam Village of Srirangapatna taluk, Mandya district, karnataka State, India. The temple is located at a higher elevation of the Cauvery river basin. The word Nimisha in Kannada means minute. There is a saying that the goddess fulfills the desires of devotees in a minute. The Goddess Nimishamba is nothing but Goddess Parvathi. The temple comes under the HR&CE department of Karnataka. Aksheeswara (Lord Shiva) is in the form of small size linga, there is a small sized Nandi facing Shiva diagonally and Lakshminarayana temple located adjacent to Nimishamba idol. The temple complex also encloses the statue of Hanuman, Suryanarayana and Ganapathi.
History of Sri Nimishamba Temple
Nimishamba temple was constructed 400 years ago by Raja Wadiyar. The temple was constructed during the period of 1578 to 1617. The temple is constructed as per the Agamoktha system, the idol is installed on basis of Shiva Panchayathan (kind of Pooja). The temple is located on the banks of river Cauvery. One can take a dip in the river Carvery before visiting the temple.
Nimishamba temple has the idol of goddess installed along with the Sreechakra. The Sree chakra is carved on a black stone that has Beejakshari Moolamantra. There is a belief that after visiting the temple problems in marriage proposals will get cleared.
One of the unique features of this temple is balipeeta. There is a big brass bell hanging from the ceiling of the temple. The bell will be rung by the priest after placing Bali Bhojanam on balipeeta. The Crows come to balipeetam to eat the bhojanam.
Shri Nimishamba Jayanthi Mahotsavam
The Nimishamba Jayanthi will be performed on Vaishaka Shuddha Dashami (mid of April) every year. Abhisheka with 108 kalasa will be conducted to the idol. During the Pooja following homa will be performed in the temple.

Mythological Importance of Sri Nimishamba Temple
The legend of the temple goes like this… Once there lived a King called Sumanaksha. As per the direction of lord Parameshwara (Lord Shiva) he decided to perform pundarika yaga for the wellness of the world. Mukta Rishi took the responsibility of performing the Yaga as per the words of Sumanaksha.
Janumandala and Sumandala learnt the matter of Yaga from Narada. They decided to prevent Sumanaksha from performing this Yaga. They had the vara (Boon) from Lord Brahma that they can’t be killed by any weapons. They took the help of Guru Shukracharya and sent the army to fight against Muktharushi. Muktharushi defeated the army in no time. Janumandala and Sumandala waged war and defeated Muktharishi. Muktha rishi started praying to Goddess Parvati. Goddess Parvathi came out of Yagna Kunda and killed Janumandala and Sumandala in one Minute along with that the Yaga was also completed. Muktha rishi becomes very happy and prised goddess in the name of ‘O Jaganmathe Nimishmbha’ from then the goddess is called “Nimishamba”.
The architecture of Sri Nimishamba Temple
The temple is constructed in Dravidian Style architecture facing East. The temple has a 7 story high gopura (Rajagopuram). The temple has ornamental pillars. Sreechakra imprinted in front of the statue of Goddess, which has a lot of circles and triangles on which beejakshara mantra is carved. The temple has Muktamantapa, Prakaram, and garbhagruha.
