Kunti Betta is located in Pandavapura taluk Mandya district. The Hillock is located at an elevation of 2882 feet above sea level. Kunti Betta is famous for night trekking activity. The name Kunti /Onake betta referees to the story of Pandavas and Kunthi stayed in caves of this hillock during the period of exile. 

KuntiBetta is a historical place. The view of sunrise at the top of the hills is very beautiful. The hill is surrounded by paddy and sugarcane fields. 

Kunthi/Onake betta has 100 stone steps. The stone steps end at Sri.Malikarjunatemple. The temple is constructed in Dravidian architecture. The temple has Gopura, Garudastmba, and Garbhagruha. There is a Ganesh painted on a stone beside the temple. Next to the temple, there is Kalyani called Kunthikola (Kunti pond). There is a Kalyana mandapa behind the temple to perform marriages. 

The trekking of the hill is a bit difficult there no steps to reach the top. The only way to reach the top is to climb the rocks which are inclined at an angle of 60 degrees. It takes 20 to 30Min to reach the top of the hill . It is really worth to climb the hill one can enjoy the beautiful sunset from the top.

History of Kunti Betta

Apart from the good view at the top KuntiBetta also has Historical importance. During the war of Srirangapatana, the French groups stayed here and helped Tippu Sulthan to fight against the British. The protected soldiers of Portuguese hide in this hill and fight against Hydaerali. There are also rumors that soon after the war traces of weapons used by Portuguese soldiers were found in these hills. 

Mythological Importance of Kunti Betta 

  • Story of Pandavas:

The Hills says the story of Mahabharatha. The Pandava’s along with their mother Kunti were believed to have stayed in pandavapura during the 12 years of their vanavasa (Exile). This hill was a favourite spot for Kunthi and she used to spend a lot of time at this hill hence the hills are named Kuntibetta. At the top of the hill there is a utensil shaped rock and rock pestle. There is a belief that Kunthi used this rock for cooking food and pestle for grinding hence this Hills is also known as Onake Betta.

KSRTC (Bus)  

KSRTC and Private Buses are available from Bangalore to Srirangapatna(fare: ₹110/-) from there you can reach pandavapura railway station by boarding Srirangapatana –Pandavapura bus get down near Pandavapura railway station stop, from Pandavapura railway station shared autos and buses are available to reach the base of the hill.

ISRTC(Train) 

Trains are available from Mysore and Bangalore, you have to get down at Pandavapura Railway Station. (fare: ₹60/-) from Bangalore and (fare: ₹10/-) from MysoreFrom Pandavapura railway station shared autos and buses are available to reach the base of the hill.
