It is a popular tourist destination with many palaces, forts and temples.  It is popularly known as the ‘Blue City’.  It is the cultural capital of Rajasthan state.  Blue City- originally the superior class, the Brahmin’s houses were painted in blue. This was done to identify the Brahmin houses from the fort above. But as time passed, after independence the caste system was abolished and all the houses started to be painted with blue.
