One Short Trip

Jal Mahal

Jal Mahal is built in Mansagar lake on the Amer road, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. This Mahal is on the left side of the circle on Amer road and 7 kms from Ajmeri gate. It is a water palace built in the 18th century, as a pleasure resort for the Maharajas of Jaipur.

About Jal Mahal

Jal Mahal is also called ‘Eye ball’ as it is in the middle of the lake. It was also called a ‘Romantic Palace’. It is believed that Raja Pratap Singh constructed this palace and Sawai Jai Singh II started renovating this palace in the year 1799. It is also believed that the King used to spend his private time with his Queens in this palace and was also used by the royal family to take bath.

Jal Mahal is a five storey building built with red sandstone. The four floors are under water and only one floor is seen above the water. It is said that the palace was built when there was severe drought and it took many years to build. At the corner of the building are four octagonal shaped umbrellas. There are around 21 decorated pillars and a garden on the rooftop called ‘Chameli Bagh’. There is a platform which was used as a stage for dancers.

Restoration of Jal Mahal

After independence, due to poor maintenance and dumping of waste into the lake, the palace was going into ruins. In 2004, the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation along with the local public thought about the restoration work. A 99 year lease was given to a business tycoon, Mr.Navratan Kothari to develop 100 acres along the Mansagar lake and the Palace.

The lake restoration project of Mansagar lake area with an estimated investment of Rs. 1.5 billion was started. It was also reported that about 500,000 cubic metre of silt was removed from lake and later used to strengthen the the embankment and building of islands as wintering ground for migratory birds.
