A Sunrise Trek Steeped in Legend
Also called Onake Betta, Kunti Betta rises to 2,882 feet in Pandavapura taluk and has become one of Karnataka's most popular night-trekking destinations. Its name recalls the Mahabharata legend that Kunti and the Pandavas sheltered in caves on this hillside during their years of exile.
The trek follows around 100 stone steps up to Sri Mallikarjuna Temple, built in Dravidian style with a gopura, garudastamba and garbhagruha, and passes a small pond known as Kunthikola. Surrounded by paddy and sugarcane fields, the hill is best known for its sunrise views, drawing trekkers who climb through the night to reach the summit by dawn.
Because the climb is popular as an overnight trek, most visitors set out from Bangalore or Mysore in the late evening to reach the base by midnight, making the ascent by torchlight or moonlight before settling in to watch the sun rise over the surrounding farmland from the summit.
