About Udaipur
Founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II after Chittor fell repeatedly to Mughal sieges, Udaipur was built around a chain of artificial lakes ringed by the Aravalli hills — earning it the names "City of Lakes" and, among some travellers, the "Venice of the East." The Sisodiya Rajputs, rulers of the Mewar kingdom, made it their capital for nearly 400 years, leaving behind the sprawling City Palace complex that still dominates the lakefront skyline.
Beyond the palace, Udaipur's old city is dense with temples, havelis and lakeside ghats — from the towering Jagdish Temple near the palace gates to the hilltop Karni Mata shrine reachable by ropeway. Its combination of royal history, water, and hill views makes it one of the most photographed cities in Rajasthan.
