About Jaipur District
Jaipur, the "Pink City", was founded in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh II, who moved his capital down from the hilltop fort of Amer to a planned city on the plains below, one of India's earliest examples of grid-based urban planning, laid out according to principles of Vastu Shastra and the Shilpa Shastra texts. The city earned its pink hue in 1876, when Maharaja Ram Singh had the buildings of the old city painted terracotta pink to welcome the Prince of Wales, a tradition maintained by law in the walled city to this day.
Together with Udaipur and Jodhpur, Jaipur forms part of Rajasthan's "Golden Triangle" tourist circuit alongside Delhi and Agra, and its forts, palaces, and Jantar Mantar observatory were collectively inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019, recognising the city itself as one continuous architectural achievement.
