About Jaisalmer

Deep in the Thar Desert near the Pakistan border, Jaisalmer is built almost entirely from golden-yellow sandstone, giving it its nickname the "Golden City." At its heart is Jaisalmer Fort, one of the few "living forts" left in the world, still home to a working community within its 99 bastions and centuries-old havelis.

Beyond the fort, Jaisalmer's identity is tied closely to the desert itself — from the Sam Sand Dunes' camel safaris and sunset camps to the Jaisalmer War Museum's tribute to the 1971 Battle of Longewala fought nearby. Few places in India combine medieval fort architecture with open desert experiences quite as directly as Jaisalmer.

1156 AD, by Rawal Jaisal, after whom the city is named.
