This circuit pairs two very different kinds of pilgrimage. First, Chidambaram, home to one of Shaivism's most philosophically significant shrines — the temple of Nataraja, Shiva as the cosmic dancer. Then the Navagraha temples, nine separate shrines clustered around Kumbakonam and Mayiladuthurai, each dedicated to one of the nine planetary deities of Hindu astrology.
Chidambaram is one of the Pancha Bhoota Stalas, the five elemental shrines of Shiva, representing akasha or space — fittingly, its innermost sanctum holds no fixed idol at all, only an empty space behind a curtain, known as the Chidambara Rahasyam. The temple's soaring gopurams are carved with the 108 karanas, the fundamental postures of Bharatanatyam, making Chidambaram as significant to Indian classical dance as it is to devotion.
