Jaganmohan Palace / Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery is one of the best art galleries in South India. It is also one of the oldest buildings in Mysore city(almost 150 years old).which is located in the city center. The palace has historical importance to Mysore royal family(Wadiyar dynasty). Jaganmohan Palace / Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery was built during the period of Krishna rajaWadiyar III in the year 1861.
History of Jaganmohan Palace / Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery
The Jaganmohan Palace / Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery and old Mysore palace both were constructed in the year 1861.In the royal wedding of the elder daughter of Sri.ChamarajaWadiyar III the Old palace build with wood got burnt in a fire accident. Which took place in the year 1897. After the fire accident, the royal family shifted to Jaganmohan Palace. The royal family resided in this palace from 1897-1912.
During the 15 years of stay in Jaganmohan palace, the royal family met with many important events like the coronation of Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV, Every day Durbar, Dasara Durbar, Convocation events of Mysore university ect.,
The Mysore dynasty built a new palace in the year 1912(Ambavilasaaramne). The royal family shifted to a new palace and later the Jaganmohan palace was converted into an art gallery by Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV. It contains around 2000 nos of world-famous paintings. The Jagan Mohan palace was named as Sri Jayachamarajemndra art gallery after 1955.
JaganMohan Palace / Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery Architecture
The palace is of 3 stories build according to traditional Hindu architecture style. The external facade for the palace is provided with 3 doors which have carvings of Dashvataram(10 avatars of Lord Vishnu). The interior walls of the palace have mural paintings. The interior of the building has a family tree of the Wadiyar dynasty. Wall paintings in the Jagan Mohan palace were painted with vegetable dyes. The staircases are made up of wood.
Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery:
The Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery has around 2000 numbers of paintings. Which includes the paintings of world-famous painters like Aless Laddy, Nikolai Roerich, PP Ruben, TitanJiladinVille, Raja Ravi Varma, Raja Rama Varma, S.L.Haldankar, M.Veerappa, Subbukrishna, Rabindranath Tagore.
Every painting in the Jagan Mohan palace is unique and beautiful in their own way. The Lamp lady (also called “Glow of Hope”) painting by S.L.Haldankar and French musical calendar clock is the main attraction of the gallery. The Jaganmohan palace also contains royal furniture, musical instruments, clocks, sandal carvings ivory carvings of the royal family. The painting of the Dasara durbar is painted with around 200-300 people, each face is unique and clear.
The gallery has around 10-12 numbers of paintings of Raja Ravi Varma and Raja Rama Varma. The paintings are The envoy-Krishna, Krishna Balarama freeing from their parents, Draupathi, Sairandhri, Ravana Kills Jatayu, Matsyagandhi and Raja Harischandra selling his wife and son, Ladymusicians, Babysucking, Indrajith. It is said that in all paintings the main character was painted by Raja Ravi Varma at the same time the background was painted by Raja Rama Varma.
During the visit of Jagan Mohan palace, the visitors will be provided with audio aid which helps to know about each painting.
