About Jaisalmer War Museum
Popularly known as ‘JWM’, this Museum was dedicated to the war heroes of India. Built on 10 acres of land, it is a memorial that exhibits the strength of Indian soldiers, their contributions and sacrifice during the time of war. Lieutenant General Bobby Mathews conceived the idea of creating a museum, as a tribute for the war heroes of Longewala battle in 1971. The Museum holds a number of collections from the war and was corroborated and opened for the public in the year 2015. Lieutenant General Bobby Mathew convinced, created and furnished the Museum but Lieutenant General Ashok Singh inaugurated and opened the Museum to the general public on the 24th August 2015.
Things to see
There are two display rooms- Indian Army hall and Longewala hall, an audio visual room, souvenir shop and a cafeteria.
Longewala Hall: It showcases the progression of ‘the battle of Longewala’ as it took place on the night of 4th December 1971. The hall also displays Indian Army operations on Eastern and Western sectors during the Indo-Pak war 1971.
Indian Army hall: It showcases the War fought in 1947-1948, 1965 and 1999 (Kargil). The hall also displays arms and ammunition captured and equipments used during various war by the Indian Army. Various facets of the role of Indian Army in national development, disaster relief and aid to civil authorities are well documented in this hall (Wikipedia).
There is an ‘Honor Wall’ that has engraved the names of gallantry award winners of the Paramvir Chakra and Mahavir Chakra.
Audio visual room: Movies about the battle in which Major Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri, a recipient of Mahavir Chakra gives a detailed account of soldiers who fought the war in screened.
Fighter jet, guns, various weapons and equipments used by the military are in display at the Museum.
