History of Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple
Sri Ranganathaswamy temple was first constructed (Only Inner portion of the temple) in the year 817 AD by the lady called Hambi. In the year 894 AD Ganga dynasty King Thirumalaraya completed the temple by constructing muktha mantapa and mahadwara at the left side of the temple.
During the period of Vijayanagara, dandanayaka named Sri Ranga constructed the prakara and five steps, big elephants at both sides of the entrance. His wife Alumelamma used her ornaments to decorate the statues in the temple. After them the temple was looked after by Mysore Wadiyar’s, Hyder Ali and Tippu sultan. In earlier 12th century Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana granted Srirangapattana to Vaishnava saint Ramanujacharya as Agraharam (learning center).
Katorothsava : Katorothsava was the festival started by Hyder Ali in the year 1774 A.D. It is celebrated in the month of Dahnurmasa ( Month of December). During this festival Mohiniavarata of Lord Vishnu is worshipped in the stone mantapa of the temple. On the ninth day of the Katorotsava royal family performs Pooja.
