Shri Manshapurna Karni Mata Temple

Karni Mata temple is a Hindu Temple located on Machla Magra Hills, near Doodh Talai lake in Udaipur, Rajasthan state, India. At the base of the hell is Deen Dayal Park, where will have to climb around 150 steps which will take around half an hour or less to reach the temple or you can take ropeway which will take just 5 to 6 minutes.

Story of Karni Mata temple 

Karni Mata was a Hindu Sage who was born as the seventh daughter of Charan Rajput clan in 1387 in Suwap village of Jodhpur district. Believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Durga, her original name was Ridhu Bai. She was married to Depoji Charan of Sathika village. After 2 years of married life, she left her husband in order to renounce the worldly pleasures, she married off her sister to her husband and left the village. After wondering for sometime, she settles in a place called Deshnok, 30 kilometres from Bikaner. After becoming a sage she was called as ‘Karni Mata’ who was loved by the villagers. At the age of 151 years, on 21st March 1538 while retiring to Deshnok, the convoy halted in order to drink water near Kolayat Tehsil. It is believed she disappeared and was not found anywhere since then.

History of the temple  

The temple of Karni Mata at Udaipur was built by Maharana Karan Singh from 1622 to 1628. At the same time, he developed the residential area in Machla Magra for safety purpose. The temple was abandoned for a long time, but in 1997, the temple committee was formed and decided to restore and renovate the temple premises, which still in progress.

On reaching the top of the hill, we can see the panoramic view of Udaipur city, the Dudhtali lake, Pichola Lake, Lake Palace, City Palace, Jagmandir and the whole city.

From Udaipur city bus station you can take a Uber or walk it is about 2 Kms

There are direct buses available from Udaipur city bus station to the temple. 


The city is well connected from all sides, you can take auto rickshaw or taxi from Udaipur railway station, which is about 2 Kms


Nearest Maharana Pratap Airport (Domestic Airport) is 24 kilometres from City Palace Drivetime approximately 40min –  1hr
