Ghati Subramanya Story
The main Deity of this temple is Lord Karthikeya. He is found along with Lord Narasimha. according to the legend both idols are believed to have emerged from the Earth [Swamybhu].
The idol of Karthikeya, in the form of a seven headed Cobra is facing East, while the idol of Lord Narasimha faces West. As per the legend it is believed that the deity appeared in the dream of king of Sandur, revealing the whereabouts of the idol. The king with the help of the locals discovered the idol of the deity and then commenced the temple to be built around them.
Purana
According to purana Lord Shiva killed Tripurasura later. Tripurasura’s son Takasura, Simhavakra, Gajasya and Shurapadma started troubling mankind. The Deva’s and the people go to Brahma for help and also prayer Lord Vishnu to help them. According to Brahma, Shiva’s son had to kill these asuras (Demons). Shree Hari suggested Lord Shiva to marry Parvati. Later Shanmukha (Subramanya) will be born and kills all the Demons.
Subramanya’s Anger
Once Brahma was not able to tell the meaning of ‘Omkara’. Out Of anger Subramanya puts Brahma in prison. Shiva comes for Brahma’s help and with the permission of Subramanya releases Brahma from prison. Subramanya out of guilt comes to earth (Bhu-Loka) in the form of Ghata sarpa (Serpent). As Subramanya has come to earth in the form of Serpent, he knows he can be attacked by Garuda. Subramanya prayed to Lord Srihari for help. Sri Hari along with Lakshmi comes in the form of Lakshmi Narasimha and guards Subramanya.
Killing of Demon
An Asura named Ghatikesura lived in this place and was troubling the sages and the people. To help and save the sages and people, Subramanya fights with Ghatikesura and kills him. Hence the place came to be known as Ghati Subramanya. And also as Subramanya’s self manifest [Swayambu] Idol was found here it is called ‘Subramanya – Kshetra’
