Lepakshi is a small village in Andhra Pradesh's Sri Sathya Sai district, just over 120 km from Bangalore — close enough for a full day trip, and home to one of the most remarkable temple complexes built during the Vijayanagara Empire.

The Veerabhadra Temple, built in the 16th century and traditionally credited to the brothers Viranna and Virupanna, treasury officials under the Vijayanagara king Achyuta Deva Raya, is dedicated to Veerabhadra, a fierce manifestation of Shiva. What makes it extraordinary isn't just its scale but its detail: the temple houses one of the largest surviving collections of Vijayanagara-era mural paintings, covering its ceilings with scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Puranas and Shaivite legend.

Just outside the main shrine stands an unfinished Kalyana Mantapa — a marriage hall of 70 intricately carved granite pillars, left incomplete but striking enough that visitors have compared it to the Parthenon. Inside the temple's Natya Mandapa (dance hall), one pillar among dozens appears to hang without touching the floor — a piece of engineering that has puzzled visitors for centuries, including, according to local accounts, British colonial engineers who tried and failed to find what was supporting it.

A short walk from the temple leads to a massive monolithic Nandi, carved from a single block of granite and among the largest such statues in India. The village's name is said to come from the Ramayana itself — “Le Pakshi,” meaning “rise, bird” in Telugu, the words Rama is said to have spoken to the dying eagle Jatayu, who fell here after trying to stop Ravana's abduction of Sita.
