Madurai, Rameswaram & Kanyakumari Tour
from Bangalore
From a Temple City to Land's End
This trip covers roughly 1,700 kilometres of road in four days, but the distance is really the point: it takes you from the heart of temple-town Tamil Nadu all the way to the exact spot where the Indian subcontinent runs out of land. The first stop, Madurai, is built entirely around the Meenakshi Amman Temple, a Pandya-era complex expanded by the Nayaka kings, its fourteen gopurams covered in painted stucco figures and its Thousand Pillar Hall one of the most photographed interiors in the state.

From Madurai the route runs to Rameswaram, crossing the Pamban Bridge onto the island where the Ramanathaswamy Temple stands — one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva, and one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites. Its corridor, running over 1,200 metres around the temple's perimeter, is the longest of any Hindu temple in India, and its twenty-two sacred wells are traditionally bathed in before darshan.
The road then turns south for the longest single stretch of the trip — roughly six hours down the coast to Kanyakumari, the southernmost point of mainland India, where the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean are all said to meet. Here, on a rock roughly 500 metres offshore, Swami Vivekananda meditated for three days in December 1892 before his journey to the West; the Vivekananda Rock Memorial built there in 1970 is now reached by a short ferry ride and remains one of the most visited monuments in the country.

Beside it stands the 133-foot Thiruvalluvar Statue, completed in 1999 in honour of the Tamil poet-philosopher, and on the mainland itself the ancient Kumari Amman Temple — one of the 108 Shakti Peethas — sits right at the water's edge. Watching the sun rise or set over three oceans from this exact point is, for most travellers, the single image that stays with them longest from the whole trip.
One Short Trip runs this as a 4-day trip from Bengaluru — two temple cities first, then the long, worthwhile run down to India's southern tip.
