One Short Trip

Nahargarh Fort

Nahargarh fort is in Jaipur city, Rajasthan state, India.
It stands on the edge of the Aravalli Hills, along with Amer fort and Jaigarh Fort. These three forts formed a strong defense ring for the city of Jaipur. Nahargarh means ‘Abode of tigers’ which was originally called ‘Sudarshan Garh’. Built at a height of about 400 meters above the ground, the main attraction is the construction of rainwater harvesting.

Story of Nahargarh Fort

According to the folklore, the construction of this fort was started in the year 1734 by Sawai Raja Jaisingh. The fort was started in the name of Sudarshan Garh. During the day, whatever construction would have been completed, would be destroyed at night. It became a puzzle to everyone, and they were not able to understand what was going wrong.

They say that the ‘wandering soul of Nahar Singh Bhoomia’, a Rajput was putting hindrance in the construction of this fort.

One night Raja Jaisingh dreamt about the wandering soul of Nahar Singh Bhoomia, who said that the place belongs to him and to build a temple in his name. Raja Jai Singh II, constructed a temple in the name of Prince ‘Nahar Singh Bhoomia’ where even now it is a place of devotion. As soon as the temple was built and the fort renamed after Nehar Singh, the construction of the Fort got completed without any hindrance. It is believed that Nahar Singh is protecting Nahar Garh even to this day.

Construction of Nahargarh Fort

During the 18th century, the palaces inside the fort were constructed by Sawai Ram Singh and Sawai Madhav Singh. Sawai Ram Singh had 9 wives (Queens) for whom 9 identical blocks were constructed. On the ramparts of the fort, there is a main Bhavan (Palace) which is named after Sawai Madhav Singh as ‘Sri Madhavendra Bhawan’. These are two-story buildings built in a similar pattern with 9 blocks and are named after his beloved ones.

The names of the Bhavan are Chandraprakash, Surajprakash, Kushalprakash, Anandprakash, Jawaharprakash, Lakshmiprakash, Ratanprakash and Lalithprakash. All of them are two storied with all the facilities like lobby, bedroom, storeroom, bathroom, and kitchen. Madhavendra Bhavan is constructed in both Indian and western styles. The Queens would stay on the ground floor during winters and on the first floor during summers. The palace is designed with beautiful art work.

The Raja’s Bhavan is at the center of the Queen’s quarters, 4 are to the left and 4 to the right. The corridor would connect Raja’s Bhavan to the Queen’s quarters but there would be a wall built between each Bhavan where the Queens would not know with whom the king would spend time.
