Brahma Temple
Brahma Temple Pushkar city, Ajmer district, Rajasthan state, India. This temple is one of very few temples dedicated to Lord Brahma, the god of creation (Hindu).
Mythology of Brahma Temple
The temple is described to have been built by Sage Vishwamitra after Brahma’s yagna. It is also believed that Brahma himself chose this location for his temple. The temple was renovated in the 8th century by Adi Shankara (Hindu philosopher), in the 14th century it was renovated again and the current structure was added by the Maharaja Jawantraj of Ratlam who made additions and repairs retaining the original temple.
Architecture of Brahma Temple
The temple is made of marble stone slabs. There is an image of Hans, the vehical of Lord Brahma on top of the main doorway.
The temple sanctum sanctorum holds the idol of four headed (chaturmukha) Brahma. Three heads can be seen directly but the fourth which is behind is seen through the mirror. Brahma and his consort Gayatri can be seen in this temple. Facing the garbhagruha, is a turtle made of white marble. On the walls there are images of peacock and Goddess Saraswati. Inside the temple complex there is a silver doorway which leads down to a small cave temple of Lord Shiva.
Story of Brahma Temple – Pushkar
According to Padma Purana, Vajranabha a demon was trying to kill the children of Brahma and harassing people. When Bramha killed Vajranabha, three petals fell to the ground from his Lotus at three places forming three lakes, which was later called Jyeshta Pushkar, Madhya Pushkar and Kanishta Pushkar. When Brahma came down to the Earth, he named the place where the petals of the flower fell as Pushkar (Pushpa-flower; Kar-hand). Brahma decided to perform a Yagna at Jyeshta Pushkar. In order to perform the Yagna peacefully without being attacked by the demons he created hills on four sides, Nilgiri to the North, Ratnagiri to the South, Surya Giri the East and Sanchoora to the West.
Savitri’s Curse To perform the Yagna he had to sit with his wife, Goddess Savitri. As Savitri delayed to come to the yagna in time, an annoyed Brahma requested Indira (The King Of Heaven) to find a suitable girl for him to Wed. Indira finds a Gujar’s daughter (a milkmaid) named Gayatri. Vishnu certifies the girl to be pure. Brahma completed the yagna with his new consort Gayatri sitting beside him. When Savitri finally arrives and sees Gayatri sitting next to Brahma, gets agitated and curses:
- Brahma that he would ‘never be worshipped in any form on Earth’ but later reduces the curse and permits his worship in Pushkar,
- Indira for helping Brahma, ‘to be easily defeated in battles’,
- Vishnu to ‘suffer the separation from his wife as a human’,
- Agni who was offered the Yagna ‘to be all devouring’ and
- Priest to be always poor.
Endowed by the power of Yagna, Gayatri dilutes the curse given by Savitri. Gayatri blessed Pushkar to be the king of pilgrimage, Indira to retain his heaven, Vishnu to be born as Rama and unite with his wife and the priest to become scholars.
Savitri moved to Ratnagiri hill and emerged as a spring (stream). There is a temple built here in her honor. Ratnagiri hill is behind the Brahma Temple. The temple and the Statue of Goddess Savitri is made of marble. While Gayatri, afraid of Savitri’s wrath, sits on the lower hill Suryagiri, at the eastern side of the lake.
