About Chamarajeshwara Temple
Chamrajeshwara temple located middle of Chamarajanagara. The temple was built in the year 1826(around 10th century) with Hoysala architecture. The City Chamarajanagar was initially called as Arikotara / Hari Kutaara’ ( Ari means enemy Kotara means Axe). In the year 1776, the city was renamed as Chamarajanagar in the name of Mysore Wadiyar dynasty King Sri.Jayachamarajendra wodeyar. The temple is built in an area of 232×195 feet base area. The main attraction of the temple is 5 story 70 feet tall Raja Gopura.
History of Sri. Chamarajeshwara Temple
Sri. Chamarajeshwara temple was built by Sri. Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar for the remembrance of his father Sri. Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar.
Before the construction of the temple, the Shivalinga made in Sringeri was brought to this place with the blessings of Adi. Shankaracharya (Founder of Advithasiddhanta). Later the Shivalinga was installed and the temple was built around it in the remembrance of Sri.JayachamarajaWodeyar.
The temple also installed with Navgraha. Special Pooja will be performed on Amavasya day (New Moon day)
Chamrajeshwara Ratha yatra / Car festival
Ratha yatra is one of the major festival celebrated in the month of Ashada (July). The ratha /chariot used for the festival is 167 years old and built by Basavaraje Urs of Urs dynasty. Urs Dynasty was royal treasures for the Mysore Wadiyar dynasty. In the festival special ritual will be performed by the newly married couples by throwing ripened banana below the wheel of the rolling chariot. The childless couples pull the chariot and get the blessings.
Girijakalyana also celebrated as an important festival in the month of June. Special Pooja will be performed during the day of Kalyanothsava.
Architecture of Sri. Chamarajshwara Temple
The temple architecture is built as per Dravidian and Hoysala style of architecture. The temple has a big courtyard with a golden painted apex. The temple resembles theBalamurali temple at Srirangapatana. The most beautiful part of this temple is the walls are painted with famous mythological stories like Samudra Manthana, Grijakalyana.
The paintings are done using Crushed colored blue red yellow stones and diamond gums. These great paintings were done by Somavamsha Dynasty artists. The temple also encloses the Statues of Sri. Chamundeshwari and Kempananjamba.
The temple encloses MuktaMantapa(Open Pillared Hall ), NandhiMantapa and Garbhagruha. At the entrance, the temple has a statue of Ganesha, Chamundeshwari, and Nandhi. The 5 story raja gopuram has 5 golden-colored Kalasha at the top.
