About Ajmer District
Ajmer sits at the geographic heart of Rajasthan, ringed by the Aravalli hills, and has long served as a meeting point of religious traditions. The district takes its name from Ajayameru, founded in the 7th century by the Chauhan Rajput ruler Ajayaraj, and later became a key administrative centre during both the Mughal and British colonial periods thanks to its central location and connections to Delhi and Agra.
The district is best known for two very different but equally significant pilgrimage sites just a short drive apart: Ajmer Sharif Dargah, one of the most revered Sufi shrines in the world, and Pushkar, home to one of Hinduism's only Brahma temples and its sacred lake. Together they make Ajmer one of the few places in India where major Hindu and Islamic pilgrimage traditions sit side by side.
