Why are most of these in Rajasthan?
Rajasthan's Rajput and Mughal history left it with India's densest concentration of living forts and palaces. Karnataka's own heritage sites, from Tipu Sultan's era, are here too, and we'll add more states' heritage as we travel further.
Which fort should I see first in Rajasthan?
Amer Fort (Jaipur) and Mehrangarh Fort (Jodhpur) are the two most complete and best-preserved — start there if time is short.
Are any of these still lived in?
Yes — Jaisalmer Fort is a rare "living fort" with thousands of residents still inside its walls, unlike most forts, which are pure monuments today.
